Learning from Breath of the Wild
Checkout this comparison between our player (made in Unity) and Link from Breath of the Wild! This is our testing scene complete with our own “ “shrine” 😂 😝 Tried to get the mechanics as close as possible.
GDU! Team Hack N Slash has been making a player with controls based off of BOTW this year. Special attention was put on the way the camera zooms in and out based on the angle without passing through the ground. You can see how the camera distance changes at different rates as you angle it up and down. Notice how the camera is free to spin around when the player is stationary. Link can point in any direction and even run towards the camera so long as you aren’t rotating the camera but once you do Link starts to turn. When you angle the camera low Link is positioned at the bottom of the screen but at high angle he’s close to the center. This lets you see enemies from all directions while at a close angle you can focus on the enemy right in front.
BOTW has such natural feeling controls because of these and many more small details. It was super interesting breaking down the movement mechanics for BOTW. This was made by @illsaveus
